1. How do I know which SM model’s tensile strength I need?
Tensile strength requirement scales with the mechanical load the insulator has to withstand under short-circuit or vibration stress — busbars carrying higher fault currents or larger cross-sections generally need a model further up the 500N-5000N range rather than the smallest available size.

2. Does a higher rated voltage automatically mean a physically larger insulator?
Generally yes — creepage and clearance distances (the surface and through-air paths current would need to travel to arc across) both increase with voltage, so a 6000V-rated model is typically taller or has a larger body than a 660V model even if the mounting thread size is the same.

3. Brass or steel insert — does it matter which one I specify?
Brass resists corrosion better in humid or outdoor-adjacent environments and doesn’t require plating, while steel inserts are more common where cost matters more than long-term corrosion resistance and the installation stays in a dry indoor panel.

4. Can different SM models be mixed within the same panel or project?
Yes — it’s common to use a lower-strength model like SM20 at lighter support points and a higher-rated model like SM60 where the busbar carries more mechanical load, as long as each point is sized to its own load rather than standardized to the heaviest one by default.

5. Does choosing a higher tensile strength than needed cause any downside?
Beyond added cost, an oversized insulator can also mean a larger physical footprint that doesn’t fit the panel’s existing hole spacing or clearance — matching strength to actual load rather than defaulting to the highest-rated model avoids both issues.
